Preacher: Rev. Neil McDonald
Readings: 2 Chronicles 32:24-33, Luke 12:13-21
After seeing God’s miraculous deliverance of Israel from the attack of the Assyrian army, Hezekiah prospered but became sick. When he prayed, God promised to give him 15 more years and gave a sign of the sun going back 10 steps up the stairway of Adullum. When men from Babylon came to ask about the sign, instead of talking to them about God’s deliverance and faithfulness, Hezekiah showed off his material wealth. God told him that after he died it would all be carried off to Babylon.
In his early years Hezekiah was careful to serve God, but not in his latter years. His life isn’t a “how to” for living successfully, but a warning to fear the aftermath of success and the hold material wealth can have when pleasing ourselves is our aim.
